Writing Game Reviews

Writing game reviews has become quite a profitable business today since the gaming industry has got significantly larger. The interest in video games stimulates the launching of game review sites, which are springing up like mushrooms after the rain. In this article, you will find useful tips on how to prepare and write your video game review.

Play the Game in Question

When writing game reviews, it is always a good thing to try the game yourself. Thus, you will experience the gameplay first hand and see all the elements of the game. While playing, take notes of all the things that you liked and the ones you didn’t. You should also try to cover every feature of the game to pen the highest quality review.

Write a Short Overview

Write a short introduction summing up the game, enough to catch the reader’s’ attention, but don’t spoil it too much. This part should be about 2-3 sentences giving info about the software provider, theme, design of the game etc. It could also inform players about the game’s bonus features or short tips on what to expect from the game.

There are also companies that offer services when it comes to writing game reviews, meaning you needn’t produce all of the content yourself. However, the only way to ensure that the games reviews meet your criteria is to write them yourself.

Use the Notes

Use the notes you took while playing the game and add to them. The review itself should start right after the induction section and this is where those notes will become handy. Write the notes you took, add to them, and connect them in a meaningful manner. Put as much of your notes in the review as you can to give players more info on the game.

Likes and Dislikes

Write the things that you really liked or the ones that you really hated. If you liked or hated some very particular element of the game, such as the graphics, the gameplay, the game’s bonus features, or some really annoying glitch, add it as well. Don’t put just the things that you liked about the game – include the ones you didn’t like, as well. Who knows, maybe the game development company will read your review and make some amends in the next editions of the game.

Game Elements

You should also include every concept of the game such as the graphics, animations, soundtrack, content, story, gameplay, controls, and, of course, your own opinion. Again, don’t hold yourself and tell your readers how you really feel about all these elements. This section should be right after the Likes and Dislikes since they are closely connected.

Game References

Don’t forget to include examples and references of the game, so your readers can have an idea of what you are talking about. As with the overview, this section should be informative enough without giving out too many spoilers.

Closing Paragraph

In the end, you should close your game review with an ending paragraph. This paragraph should sum it all up in about 2-3 sentences. These sentences should include your overall feel of the game, a list of all the pros and cons, as well as your final score.
